Zombie Survival 101

Originally I was going to post a Zombie Apocalypse Survival Guide, but then I realized that post would take way too long for me to write. Maybe I’ll make that a topic for a podcast one day, but for now, let's just keep things simple.

Clearly I have been watching way too many movies and TV shows that revolve around the notion of a zombie apocalypse but you have to admit, with all these shows and movies giving us the blueprint on survival, in my opinion, it almost seems blasphemous not to be ready, ya know, just in case.

So just for fun, here are some rough mental notes and how to prepare for the inevitable Zombie Apocalypse.

Exit Strategy

I would ask myself questions like:

  • “Where would I go?”
  • “How would I get there?”
  • “What’s my Plan “B” if I’m unable to evacuate?”
  • “Am I prepare to defend my house, if an outbreak happens in the middle of the night?”

After watching movies and TV shows like World War Z and The Walking Dead, I would often ask myself these random hypothetical questions. Now everywhere I go (even when I travel) its imperative that I know the location of the closest superstores like Costco, Home Depot, Target, Wal-mart, local supermarkets, and electronic shops. Not only do places like these carry food and water, but they also carry many other valuable household and non-household items.

Build an Alliance

To maximize your looting I’d suggest building an alliance. Your alliance should be composed of people you trust. This could be family members, friends, colleagues, coworkers, peers, etc. you name it. Once you’ve identified your allies, split up into teams. I’ll explain why later. Doesn’t matter how many you have in each group, just come up with 2–3 groups. If your numbers are low, don’t worry, group “tasks” will be completed by individuals.

Don’t Ignore Early Signs

This is the most important step and critical to you getting an advantage! While everyone is still in awe trying to figure out exactly what the hell is going on, join forces with your alliance and immediately head to the closest Superstore (mentioned above). The goal is to get to the store before the news actually settles; but remember, in a world where EVERYONE owns a mobile device, new news becomes old news pretty fast. Long story short, always be prepared for the unexpected “What if…?”
