A Frontline Perspective on The Great Resignation

As we approach the light at the end of the tunnel, the impact of COVID-19 may have you contemplating a career shift in what experts have labeled as The Great Resignation.

As an individual who shifted careers just a few months before the pandemic, I wanted to share some advice and perspective on the ever-changing world of work for anyone contemplating #TheBigShift.

Changing careers is no small feat, but you can start building the life you want with a bit of confidence, determination, and patience.

Although the pandemic has had a negative impact, it gave those considering change the much-needed time to slow down and reevaluate their careers.

If there’s one thing you can take away from this article, it’s understanding that identifying and evaluating your core values are critical in the decision-making process.

For me, having a work/life balance was a key factor when considering a career change. With two young boys at home, it was vital for me to have an impact on their lives while having the flexibility to pursue a career doing the things I’m most passionate about.

Plus, health and mental wellness are evident on the road to living a better life and can easily be overlooked if a job causes you to miss valuable family time due to extended hours and/or excessive travel.

Now don’t get me wrong, traveling for work and working extra hours has its perks (depending on the field you’re in), but it’s not ideal for most. And taking the necessary time to care for your body and mental state can become challenging for those constantly on the go.

While the pandemic gave us time to explore our inner passions, it also allowed employees to see how companies handle social issues, diversity, and company culture. The world is evolving rapidly, so consider a company that prioritizes these areas while providing a sustainable career path with room for advancement.

If you feel like your not making progress or stuck in your current role, don’t be afraid to self educate and invest in yourself. Online learning has become more valuable than ever, and the internet puts unlimited resources right at our fingertips. Look to your experience and skills for direction, as this will help lead you to an industry that best suits your talents.

Letting go of a consistent stream of income to pursue something different will not be the easiest thing to do. And leaving your comfort zone is definitely a hard pill to swallow when the road ahead is filled with uncertainty. Still, there’s something special about utilizing your skills and uniqueness to advance in a career/industry your passionate about.

With that said, the best advice I can give someone seeking a new job or considering a career change is to put yourself in the best position to be yourself. Embrace failure, and never give up on chasing the dream. Do your homework, research companies, never stop learning, network and connect with professionals in your ideal industry, and learn from others who have traveled a similar path. Every major life event comes with its challenges, but if you stick to that and let positivity guide you, you’ll be well on your way to living the life you’ve always dreamed of.A Frontline Perspective on The Great Resignation
